I've been musing about a graphic novel idea for a while. And now I've begun putting the pen to the page. Just a color study for the mood, but it's a start.

A while back I read a beautiful essay about Mac Tonnies, the author talked about twittering with Mac. She said she wanted to work on a novel, that it was her dream, but she simply didn't have the time.

Mac replied: "Find the time."

When I read that, it felt like Mac was talking directly to me.

Mac Tonnies' book is on the shelves

My friend Mac Tonnies asked me to do the illustrations for the interior of his book titled The Cryptoterrestrials. I was deeply honored to play a small role in this important work. Mac died in his sleep in October of last year, and the world is at a loss without his brilliant mind and calm voice. I miss him terribly.

Picasso works re-drawn (in the dark) in a class called HISTORY OF MODERN ART. I was a 19 year old NYU student, and this was the first real exposure I had to these paintings having just left the suburbs of Detroit. I am quite smitten with the frantic charm of these rapid fire sketches. No boing marks.

French impressionism, all done is quick sketches in the low light of that NYU lecture auditorium in Greenwich Village. I was watching slides projected behind the professor, and I drew 'em as fast as I could on crummy lined paper. I drew these with a pen I can no longer find. I was 19 years old. Alas, no boing marks.

This has been thumb-tacked to my wall for over a decade, and it is yellowing with age (as am I). It's an impressively accurate rendering of myself during my time as a free-lance illustrator in NYC in the mid-80's. This little cartoon was on my invoice, down in the corner. All the elements of an era; Levis Denim jacket, Yankees hat, straight leg torn jeans (ala the Ramones), Danish book bag and unshaven chin.

I would often draw these simple cartoons without any waist, the legs would simply start from under the untucked shirt or jacket, this is stolen directly from MAD magazine icon, Sergio Aragones.

Here is a party invitation during a long ago chapter of my life. My drawing style was dependant on the pen I used during the day. That pen put a wet bleeding line on the paper, and it made me draw really fast.

A typical B&W xerox poster from the 1980's. The face was from a Mort Drucker caricature in MAD magazine, it was Burt Lancaster's face from the parody of THE PROFESSIONALS. This was drawn with a pen I loved, and I can't remember it's name, but it sort of bled on the page, forcing me to draw fast. You can see that frantic speed in this drawing. Also, heavily boing marked.

Above is a very nice cartoon image that I drew for an article in CLIMBING magazine. The Romberg test is a first aid thing to evaluate altitude sickness. I really like the stylized UPA look of the characters. Super cute and simple. And, lots of energetic BOING marks.

But, the editors balked at the insipid childish look to the art. They asked me to re-draw it, and (like the worker drone I am) I complied.

Here's the ho-hum image that was eventually published. Void of boing marks. Dare I say YAWN?

These doodles were drawn on a scrap of brown cardboard with a fine-line black pen. I encourage you to double-click on the image and check out some of the detailing. I am pretty happy with the way these little drawings turned-out. It's by no means a finished piece of work, but it is a good insight to how I like to draw, especially Mr. Flat Man.

Another in a series of cartoon rock posters. I managed to squeeze a ridiculous amount of quirky detail into this thing. As I looked at it (after over a quarter century) I was impressed by my attention to the absurd. Note the Jackalope, the "diamond" back rattler, cigarettes tucked into the guys shirt, bullet holes in the sign, the self-portrait wanted poster (again) and the Kermit the Frog eyes on the horny toad. Also, the squashed giant fly was inspired by Al Jaffee. Lotsa boing marks.

This was a very simple two-color screen printing for a plastic bag for a little toy store in Jackson Wyoming. I thought it turned out really well. John Thompson played art director and I worked from a classic peach crate logo from a by-gone era. All lettering by hand, no boing marks.

Also, please note that the capital letter "A" has an incorrect serif. A repeating motif from that era (as in the post below).

Teton Mountaineering logo idea

Logo idea from, like, 15 years ago. This is a local store in nearby Jackson Hole. Nothing ever happened, but I love the hand lettered text. The textured look was all done with a tiny Winsor Newton brush and India ink on layout paper. Old school all the way!

Also, please note the capital letter "A" in the bottom center. I drew it with a serif pointing left at the top of it's shape. That was something I would do without thinking, but I now know that a correct Roman "A" does NOT have that serif. How could I have lived my life like that, lost in a fog of ignorance.

I found this image posted on Facebook. It was a college pal from New York, and his 9 year old son Leo did a bunch of really beautiful pictures (pencil on paper). I was thunderstruck, these are magnificent. Yes, I stole an image. Then I added some color. Please know, I am colorblind.

Y'gotta double click on this thing and revel in the joyous little TV robots. I can't even begin to describe how much I love this young mans work. Genius walks among us.

And, the young master even got a few BOING marks in there too (well, smelly lines), bless his heart.

A few years back, I painted my street address on a piece of wood and put it on a post in front of my house. Recently, the county changed the address, so I had to take it down, and I realized how much I liked it. My God, look at that "5" !

Yes, I know - the "8" is a little awkward, but the beautiful "W" makes up for it. No boing marks.

I've painted this same thing twice. In 1985, when I lived in New York City, I painted this the first time in my dinky apartment on Sullivan Street. I originally did it on a sheet of corrugated cardboard. I ended up giving it away.

Years later (1992) I found the reference I used crammed in some files, it was a shampoo ad in a magazine and an old Hawaiian Punch logo. So I painted it again a second time from the same swipe (that's a real term). I added the little black and white icons years after that, in like 1998. No boing marks. Acrylic on masonite.

Three little cartoons are from the book LIGHTEN UP! by Don Ladigin. These drawings explain a simple series of lightweight camping techniques for eating on the trail (instead of in camp) and setting up a stealth campsite out of view of other backcountry users. Plenty of boing marks.

Here's another of my insipid cartoons that were sold on the streets of New York in SoHo in 1982. There is an overt creepiness to the blatant cute imagery. And, in a way, it's sort of mean spirited - I mean, I am making fun of the very people who would shell out five dollars for these simple cartoons. I think the content of this cartoon was actually by a pal from my dorm named Michael DeSimone. No boing marks.

During my time in NYC during the early 1980's there was a graffiti street art thing that was sorta playful. But, at the same time, it was so pretentious (art in New York, really?). I sat in my dorm room and drew these little cartoons on a tiny pad of paper, and then sold them (for $5 each!) on the corner of West Broadway and Broome. It was easy, and I actually made a big wad of cash. I did stack of 'em, and they were all sorta like the insipid image above.

This thing is tiny, 3 x 4 1/2 inches. Disposable pen on memo pad paper, mounted on cardboard. No boing marks.

Good grief! I went a little overboard with the ridiculous amount of boing marks on this cartoon for Climbing magazine. I mean, like - WOW!

Please note the locking carabiner drawn in this image. When drawing this specific piece of gear, I feel (without modesty) like I have achieved a very-real mastery. And, I sorta like drawing bulging veins too.

The image above is an accurate representation of how I spent my decade in New York City. I made a living doing free lance story board illustrations, mostly for chilren's toys. retrieving the pack

You do realize how hard it is to retrieve the big mountaineering pack from a crevasse during a glacier rescue scenario, don't you? Well, I've practiced this (a lot) and here's what I've learned. This cartoon is in the GLACIER MOUNTAINEERING book. Lots of boing marks.

When I lived in New York, a common question between young creative types was, "Who's your favorite artist?" (a question never posed in Idaho) I would always reply Phillip DeGuard. This would produce a blank stare, and I would need to explain that he did many of the backgrounds for Warner Brothers cartoons. His stuff was amazingly quirky and expressionistic.

The late great Mr. DeGuard did all the backgrounds for the Road Runner cartoons, and his influence is obvious in the painting above.
